Fotografia Series: Jazz and Her Grandmother

Jazz, how old is your grandmother?

Maybe half of one hundred. She doesn't know.

Does she give you advice, tell you what to do?

She wants me to go to school. She can't read or write.

Does she remember what it was like here before you had radios and cellphones?

She says to tell you everyone says how good it was before those things. But she thinks now it is better. The old ways were too hard. It was a very hard life.

What was hard about it?

She says they had no shoes, no roads, no schools. Now a girl can go to school. Maybe she will not go for very long, but she can go.

Does she want to say anything else?

She hopes you will teach her how to write her name.
